The 7th International Conference on Responsible Tourism in Destination will take place in Barcelona from the 1st to the 4th October 2013. The conference will be co-chaired by Mr. Jordi Ficapal, the Director of the Sant Ignasi Observatory of Responsible Tourism (Universitat Ramon Llull), and Professor Harold Goodwin, ICRETH, Leeds Metropolitan University.
The event’s schedule will be the following:
– 1st October: Academic Day
– 2nd October: Conference Field Visit to Toroella de Montgrí and l’Estartit (Girona), focused on the conservation and regeneration initiatives which contribute to ensure a sustainable future in responsible tourism.
– 3rd October: Conferences about the environmental impact of tourism; and the role of the government in destination planning and management.
– 4th October: Conferences about the “Sense of pertinence” in historic cities, local communities, authenticity and the visitor; accessible tourism; as well as cruise tourism in the Mediterranean.
The venues of the conference will be the Turisme Sant Ignasi and ESADE buildings in Barcelona.
Some of the institutions that suport this event are the Departament d’Empresa i Ocupació de la Generalitat de Catalunya, the Agencia Catalana de Turisme, Turisme Sant Ignasi, the International Centre for Responsible Tourism – Leeds Metropolitan University, and TTG Digital.
Some of the conference speakers already confirmed are Jane Ashton, Director of the TUI Sustainable Development Group; Justin Frances, CEO of ResponsibleTravel.com Ltd; Nikki White, Head of Destinations and Sustainability at ABTA; and Gerard Brown, International Tourism Director for Routes.
The first Catalonia Responsible Tourism Awards will run parallel to the conference. Awards will be given to Catalan enterprises under 8 different categories.
